Top Tools for learning 2011 - C4LPT →
Look forward to seeing this list from C4LPT produced each year. It shows how web-based learning tools or ‘on-line learning’ doesn’t have to be a formal programme, but that there are many and varied ways to gather knowledge and learn from other people. Great to see Twitter at the top again! Thanks

This is a very useful list not just of Twitter tips, but also just general all round good advice about how to Tweet well. I was going to count up how many I’ve made - but ran out of fingers … and toes … and friends fingers … (well maybe not that one!). Will go back and review my Twitter use immediately I think! Thanks to @katelister for passing this one along through my...

Gary's Social Media Count  →
OK. Its flashy and a bit gaudy and of course you shouldn’t believe all the statistics and marketing hype you see on the web … but this really is staggering! Just click on some of the buttons for mobile use and comparisons with other media! Although these numbers take some comprehending, they clearly show this is Social Media … and its HUGE! Basic understanding of what is normal in a charities accounts or governing documents is accepted as part of the role of a trustee. So why not the organisations ICT too? Sadly some trustee boards find ICT use and the additional voice and reach that social media tools can give their organisation too daunting. Although its now a couple of years old, the free ICT Hub/NCVO ‘ICT Survival Guide...

Great post from Andy Mabbett (aka @pigsonthewing) about wi-fi coverage at events. You can always spot Andy arriving at an event by the ‘4-gang(s)’ sticking out of his bag! But very useful in these days of power hungry devices. How many of these sound familiar (maybe because we were at the same event!) but could easily not be an issue if a little time is spent checking them out...

Isn’t it funny when two posts appear in your RSS Reader from two (I think?) unconnected people from different sectors, but both talking about the same subject. Well that happened this week as both Honey and Louise chose to blog about use of and access to content via the Mobile Web Mobile access to websites and use of Smartphones continues to rise at a phenomenal rate. In workshops I...

This article from Rob Dyson on the Guardian Voluntary Sector Network blog links together a couple of recent ‘charity top 10’ lists which predictably have those with the largest national marketing spend or the greatest number of donors at the top. Rather than these, I’m always interested to hear about the difference small local organisations (for example Lost Chord or Preston...

I seem to be saying “I’ve just changed over to…” a lot lately! Is it just me? Maybe it’s to do with changing jobs, changing outlook on life … or I just like a change! You can read the report about it here (Guardian), see the background to it here (Twicket.info)...

Two things in my inbox in quick succession, both about how social media is used. Loosely slung together here, mainly for my reference library, but maybe of use to others too. I’m sure I hope this never really happens … but I bet it does! A much...

A great idea from we are what we do (on Twitter as @wearewhatwedo) that simply ‘does what it says on the tin’! Go to the website, create some Internet Buttons, add a cheesey picture and a ‘where to go for more support’ link, and you have a straightforward Internet landing page. This will be really good for friends and relatives who only use a limited number of websites...

Technology use by charities still lags behind... →
We can certainally echo this point made by NCVO In spite of significant investment from state and grant funders to increase their capacity, charities continue to lag behind other sectors in their use of technology: the National Council for Voluntary Organisations calls ICT the sector’s biggest skills-gap, with a third of small and medium charities saying they had no-one they trusted to talk...
